2020 Spring Classic Tournament - AAU Super Regional

Spring Classic Tournment has been cancelled

Here is the letter sent to club directors 3/11/20:

Good afternoon Spring Classic teams.

It is with much thought but great sadness that we send this email. Following the direction of Washington State Leadership, and on the heels of the Puget Sound Region of USA Volleyball deeming volleyball tournaments to be non-essential, we have made the decision to cancel the Spring Classic AAU Super Regional tournament.

While the tournament resides in Lewis County, an area outside of the zone covered by the Governor’s declaration, we feel that it is our responsibility to be mindful citizens and mindful of the repercussions of continuing with this event. Participants from many counties in Washington and Oregon – including King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties – have the potential to be exposed or to expose. In keeping with the request by state and local leaders to make responsible decisions and to avoid hosting or attending large-group gatherings we feel this is the most responsible decision we can make.

We have been in close contact with club directors throughout the day so many are already aware we could be heading in this direction. We know that this will disappoint many of our teams and their families, but we hope that this will keep the community safer by limiting the exposure that could have occurred at our event.
We will be in contact with club directors in the next week with more information concerning refunds. There is also the possibility of rescheduling the event for April-May we hope to hear from them whether or not they would be interested in attending. We have also notified our hotel partners and some have already been working to cancel reservations.
If you have questions, please go through your club directors so we can better manage the questions. Please know that we will be working hard trying to deal with this delicate situation and it may take some time for us to get to all the questions.

Under Armour Presents the 2020 AAU Spring Classic Tournament.

This is an open entry tournament for teams looking for an alternative to playing in Central Washington or looking for an alternative travel tournament that is not a National Qualifier. The tournament is for teams of all levels. This is the second year as an AAU Super Regional. We find that several teams attend post season AAU events, and this tournament gives you another opportunity to use your AAU Membership and - more importantly - a chance to earn free entry to one of THREE AAU Post Season Events.

The tournament will be held at the NW Sports Hub -- a 14 court facility in Centralia. With current renovations, the venue could house as many as 20 courts so teams will not have to worry about a lot of driving from the central core of tournament hotels. All Gold Division finals will be played on the feature wood courts at the NW Sports Hub. The Under Armour All-Tournament Team for each age group will be presented after each Gold Final.

There will be two rounds of pool play, followed by single elimination play. We will be awarding medals to to top three teams in each age group, so we will play off for third place in all age groups. Teams that finish in the top three are guaranteed to have players on the Under Armour All-Tournament team.

Saturday will be one round of pool and the beginning of the second round of pool play. Sunday will be the completion of the second round of pool and all of the playoff matches. All teams will play pool play matches on Sunday and have tournament play Sunday afternoon. Medals will be awarded to the top three teams in each age group

Team Limits: (tentatively for 13 courts at the NW Sports Hub)

  • U18 Division: 16 Teams
  • U16 Division: 20 Teams
  • U14 Division: 12 Teams

There are an additional 10 courts in close proximity to the HUB. We will add teams based on registrations received by the end of January.

Doors open at 8:30 AM changed 3/10/20
There is a mandatory coaches meeting Saturday at 9:00 AM. All teams must attend and verify their rosters. Please be prepared to show proof of membership for those that were not inputted in your AES Roster.

Play will begin at 9:30 AM Saturday and 8:30 Sunday

Last Scheduled Match Saturday is 5:30 PM
Last Scheduled Match Sunday is TBA

We will award All Tournament Team after each Gold Final

Can't make it to Centralia? Games will be live streamed

Why the Spring Classic is a better Travel Tournament option

We realize that there is an established inter-regional tournament on the weekend we chose to host our Spring Classic Tournament. That is not by accident. Our club teams have been traveling this same weekend every year, but the quality of the tournament we have attended has deteriorated over the years. We have run the Presidents Day Weekend tournament for over 20 years, and running large format tournaments is our specialty. Here is why our tournament is better:

  • It's an AAU Super Regional! Teams from all over the Northwest will come to compete. For champions, they get a free tournament entry to one of three AAU Championship tournaments: West Coast Championships (Las Vegas), Volleyball Festival (Phoenix), AAU Nationals (Orlando).
  • The tournament HQ is a better venue. With 14+ courts under one roof, we can give more teams that "big tournament feel".
  • For your non-National teams that are looking for a good tournament to play in, we give them a better experience; in a location that is easy to get to halfway between Seattle and Portland.
  • The format will be the same, but the logistics are better. Your teams will play pool play, plus at least one more match on Saturday, then finish pool play and have playoffs on Sunday. There are about 30 courts within about a 10 mile radius, so travel between gyms is convenient. This close proximity and the size of the HQ means we can have all the GOLD Divisions under one roof on Sunday.
  • All under one roof: concessions, 14 courts, tee-shirt vendor, spectator seating. It's the feel of a Qualifier without the cost and inconveniences.

AAU Rules, Scorekeeping, Etc. for participating teams

Coaches/Club Directors:

We will be printing out AES rosters for all the teams and will have them available for you to sign at the coaches meeting. Some directors have emailed us that they are having some issues getting all their players through AES. Here is a response I received from AAU regarding rosters and membership verification:

"Through AES they should be submitting rosters with their AAU memberships verified.  They can do this by doing the import from AAU in their AES account.  If for some reason some of their members do not show up as verified, they can show you a copy of their AAU membership card to prove they have a 2020 membership."

It might also be a good idea to login to your AAU and print out a member list, just to be safe. With so many teams coming from out of town, I do not want there to be an instance where we cannot allow a player to play because they cannot prove their AAU membership.
