2019 Mother's Day Challenge: May 11 & 12, 2019

Hosted by NW Juniors Volleyball Club

Tournament Information:

Or Third Annual Mother's Day Challenge (MDC) is an open entry for any team that wants to play in a late-season travel tournament - a convenient drive from Seattle or Portland. Teams will be accepted first come (paid), first served, until the tournament fills. This is a two-day format event.

The tournament will be held primarily at the 18-court NW Sports Hub and will utilize various schools in and around the Centralia area on Sunday if needed. More courts are secured within a 5 mile radius of the HUB so teams will not have to worry about a lot of driving from the central core tournament hotels.

Tournament Format

Format will be one full round of pool on Saturday, followed by the start of round 2 of pool.  We will complete second pool on Sunday followed by single elimination play. Teams are guaranteed at least 6 matches of play.

Additional Information:

  • Play begins at 9:00 AM both days.
  • All pool play matches will be 2/3 to 25 points with a 27 point cap.  Game 3 is to 15, no cap.
  • Playoffs will be 2/3 to 25, Game 3 to 15 — with no caps in any games.
  • Officials are not provided, teams must supply a first referee, second referee, lines people, and scorekeeper crew
  • Event tees are provided by Fine Designs and will be available at the Hub all weekend.
  • Admission will be charged for non participants: $5.00 for the weekend.

Why the Mother's Day Challenge is a better Travel Tournament option

Yes, we know that we are hosting a tournament on the same weekend as another established Mother's Day Weekend Tournament. We like the weekend for travel for our teams, but we don't like the format or the long drive for 5   1/2 matches; so we are doing something about it. We have run the Presidents Day Weekend tournament for over 20 years, and running large format tournaments is our specialty. Here is why our tournament is better:

  • The tournament HQ is a better venue. With 14 courts under one roof, we can give more teams that "big tournament feel".
  • For your non-National teams that are looking for a good tournament to play in, we give them a better experience in a location that is easy to get to halfway between Seattle and Portland.
  • All under one roof: concessions, 14 courts, vendors, spectator seating, Sports Bar, Hub City Grill restaurant -- all at a very reasonable cost.

Instructions for Canadian Teams

We typically get quite a few Canadian teams in our tournaments.  We ask that Canadian teams connect with our Region Office so that they can gather your documents. The region will collect your documents and contact us and inform us if your team is able to participate. Please do not procrastinate. The region WILL NOT allow your team to play without proper documentation.

Below are links to forms that will need to be submitted to our region office so they can clear you to participate.

Sports Hub Rules

Sports Hub Guidelines

Please note that we will be charging admission for this event. Admission is $5 per adult for the weekend. Children, students with ID, and rostered team staff will be admitted free. Outside food is not allowed in the Sports Hub, so be aware we will be checking bags at the admission gate -- the gate is located in the center entrance for the building. This will delay spectator entry so plan accordingly.

The main entrance will be open 1 hour before play begins each day. Bags will be checked for food at this entrance.

Bleacher seating is abundant, so no outside chairs needed (or permitted).

Remember: Food and drink are not allowed into the facility. HUB CITY GRUB and TAPROOM will be open throughout the weekend. There will be designated areas inside the facility for teams to put their equipment, etc. (not food or coolers); there is room outside the facility for team food tables and tents.
