2021 UA Mother's Day Challenge: May 8-9, 2021

Hosted by NW Juniors Volleyball Club

Tournament Information:

Or Fourth Annual Mother's Day Challenge (MDC) is an open entry for any team that wants to play in a late-season travel tournament - a convenient drive from Seattle or Portland. Teams will be accepted first come (paid), first served, until the tournament fills. This is a two-day format event.

The tournament will be held primarily at the 14-court NW Sports Hub and will utilize various schools in and around the Centralia area on Sunday if needed. More courts are secured within a 5 mile radius of the HUB so teams will not have to worry about a lot of driving from the central core tournament hotels.

Tournament Format

Format will be one full round of pool on Saturday, followed by the start of round 2 of pool.  We will complete second pool on Sunday followed by single elimination play. Teams are guaranteed at least 6 matches of play.

As of 4/15/21, we will modify the format in order to accommodate possible Phase Changes in Lewis County. The revised format will allow us to admit a limited number of spectators each day if Lewis County is in Phase 3.

SATURDAY WAVES:

AM: U14 & U18 (8:00 AM Start)
PM: U12 & U16 (3:30 PM Start)

FOR SUNDAY: Waves will be utilized again.

AM wave teams will begin their play first at 8:00 AM. We will clear out AM wave teams and clean, then PM Wave playoffs will start at approximately 2:00 PM.

Sunday's format will be dictated by the Phase in Lewis County, as "playoffs" are not permitted in Phase 2. Teams will get a minimum of two matches on Sunday.

Additional Information:

  • Play begins at 9:00 AM both days.
  • Most pool play matches will be 2/3 to 25 points with a 27 point cap.  Game 3 is to 15, no cap (3 or 5 team pools, or second round pools may be different).
  • Playoffs will be 2/3 to 25, Game 3 to 15 — with no caps in any games.
  • Officials are not provided, teams must supply a first referee, second referee, lines people, and scorekeeper crew
  • Event tees are provided by Fine Designs and will be available at the Hub all weekend.

IF WE HAVE PLAYOFFS: The Under Armour All-Tournament Team for each age group will be presented after each Gold Final. Teams that finish in the top two are guaranteed to have players on the Under Armour All-Tournament team.

Note on Spectators:

With the State moving to Phase 3 there is an assumption that we will be able to have spectators at this event. Please be advised that the capacity rules may limit or restrict our ability to admit spectators.

Based on Phase 3 Capacity rules set for this facility, there is a limit of 400 persons per gym (or 800 total occupants). The new rules also include coaches, event officials, etc. in the count.

  • At full capacity, the event has 14 courts.
  • Which equals 56 teams.
  • We split into AM and PM Waves in order to allow up to 6 spectators per team both days.

UPDATED EVENT INFO: 5-4-21

Coaches and fans: By now news is out that Lewis County will remain in Phase 3. Our event will go on as planned. The playing schedule will be delayed as we finalize the format. We expect to have the event live on AES by the end of the day Wednesday.

In the meantime, please read the information below to familiarize yourself with the rules and procedures for this event.

An additional note regarding spectators:

  • We have no plans to have a separate vaccinated section.
  • We have no plans to increase spectator limits above our 6 persons per team each day.
  • Your 6 spectators can be different each day. This is why we ask for a second waiver on Saturday when you check out so if you want to offer different parents the opportunity to enter.
  • "Spectators" include non-athlete children aged 0 days - 18 years old.

Why the Mother's Day Challenge is a better Travel Tournament option

Yes, we know that we are hosting a tournament on the same weekend as another established Mother's Day Weekend Tournament. We like the weekend for travel for our teams, but we don't like the format or the long drive for 5   1/2 matches; so we are doing something about it. We have run the Presidents Day Weekend tournament for over 20 years, and running large format tournaments is our specialty. Here is why our tournament is better:

  • The tournament HQ is a better venue. With 14 courts under one roof, we can give more teams that "big tournament feel".
  • There is Live Streaming on every court for families that can't make the trip, or if spectators are not yet allowed.
  • For your non-National teams that are looking for a good tournament to play in, we give them a better experience in a location that is easy to get to halfway between Seattle and Portland.
  • All under one roof: concessions, 14 courts, vendors, spectator seating, Sports Bar, Hub City Grill restaurant -- all at a very reasonable cost.
